THE GREEN AT NEW COLLEGE
THE GREEN AT NEW COLLEGE
This concept implements both structure and whimsy. Derived from the free flowing mindset, the circular shaped greens stoke curiosity and challenge the notion that recreational activities must be enjoyed in a box. Shell pathways provides a continuous loop in an infinite motion. Landscape beds are shaped organically and soften the transition between the natural and the built environments. Separated green spaces provide an opportunity for multiple events. Bio-detention is located throughout the site. Groves of trees provide natural shade.
1. Circular greens support the notion of continuous curiosity and immediately temper the expectation of “sport’. The intent of the space is to provide diverse recreational experiences ranging from performing arts to athletics.
2. Historically, this site was used by the local circus to store their circus equipment. In 1956 this area was the location of the circus hall of fame until 1980. In a nod to the sites history and it’s affiliation with the circus, this site plan proposes a palm courtyard capturing the horizontal footprint of the former hall of fame. The grove of palm trees is reminiscent of the grove located at the Pei dorms providing both greenery and shade.
3. Bio-detention and self-sustaining sites can provide social and ecological benefits. The concept provides three large areas of detention allowing for temporary storage of surface water. In doing so water can be treated and or percolate on site prior to being incorporated into the master drainage system.
4. There is currently a significant band of concrete on the north-south axis. Because of its significance to the site, we proposed retaining this piece as an implied threshold between the parking lot and activity area. Instead of concrete this line is represented with a wood deck allowing for the detention spaces to be connected.
5 + 6. This grove acts as back drop to the proposed monument sign as well anchors the northern portion of the campus. Additionally the green grove has an implied connection to the new landscape design behind the existing new college entry sign.
