CONCEPTUAL SITE PLAN
THE STUART RAE RESIDENCE
Originally designed by Ralph Twitchell in 1960 and completed in 1962, the Stuart Rae Residence exemplifies his mature modernist language defined by minimalism, structural clarity, and a carefully sequenced progression of rooms and outdoor vignettes. In response, OLA’s landscape design builds upon Twitchell’s principles, extending his architectural intent into the surrounding site.
Thin concrete bands and linear elements define space without enclosure, allowing the landscape to flow seamlessly through the architecture. Organized as a series of outdoor rooms and garden vignettes, the landscape mirrors this approach, unfolding gradually through courtyards, shaded terraces, and framed views that blur the boundary between inside and out.
Set on the bay side of Siesta Key, Florida, the design prioritizes resilience and restraint. Native, salt-tolerant plantings, permeable surfaces, and minimal site intervention work together to accommodate wind, flooding, and intense sun while preserving the site’s natural character. Vegetation is strategically placed to provide shade, guide breezes, and support passive cooling strategies central to Twitchell’s work.
Rather than serving as a backdrop, the landscape is integral to the architecture shaping movement, framing experience, and grounding the residence within its coastal context. The result is a quiet, immersive environment that reflects the Sarasota School’s enduring principles of clarity, efficiency, and harmony with place.
